No fines for Collie campers

¶ NO CAMPERS were fined for illegal camping in the Collie region over the Christmas period and through January despite an increased presence of rangers.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) last year warned fines could apply for unauthorised camping on the Hamilton Peninsula following the installation of larger, more prominent no camping signage.
However, a DBCA spokesperson confirmed to the Bulletin that no fines have recently been issued in DBCA-managed sites within Wellington National Park.
Designated areas in Wellington include the Potters Gorge, Honeymoon Pool, Gelcoat and Stones Brook campgrounds.
Under CALM Act regulations, camping outside of a designated area has a modified penalty of $100.
If an offender chooses to have the matter heard before a court, a penalty of $1000 may apply if found guilty.
“Parks and Wildlife Service rangers actively patrol recreation and campsites, which includes addressing any visitor safety issues,” the spokesperson said.
“During peak periods, including the Australia Day long weekend and New Year’s Eve, DBCA’s Wellington district worked with local authorities, and increased staff presence at specific sites, in response to increased visitation.”
