¶ THE Mineworkers’ Memorial Pool is closed indefinitely as investigations continue into a chlorine gas leak that led to the hospitalisation of a staff member on Sunday night.
A specialist team was flown from Perth to deal with the incident, which resulted in the closure of a section of Throssell Street.
A DFES spokesperson confirmed multiple triple zero calls were received before 7pm and a warning subsequently issued to people in the vicinity.
Residents in the area bounded by Throssell Street, Prinsep Street South, Wittenoom Street and Patterson Street were asked to remain inside with doors and windows closed and air-conditioners switched off.
Collie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS), Brunswick VFRS and Bunbury Career Fire and Rescue Service crews were dispatched, with eight appliances attending the scene.
The staff member was removed upon the crews’ arrival and received medical treatment.
The crews and specialist team worked throughout the night to isolate the leak, which was contained and controlled by 3am.
DFES continued to monitor the incident throughout Monday before handing over responsibility to Collie Shire.
WorkSafe is investigating the cause of the leak.
Shire president Ian Miffling told the Bulletin Collie Public Library was also shut on Monday as a precautionary measure.
“It is not yet known just when the pool will reopen, as that will depend entirely upon all the investigations currently taking place,” Cr Miffling said.
“There won’t be any reopening until such time as all agencies have completed their investigations and given the all clear.
“This is a sensible and necessary approach to take and I’m sure the public will appreciate the fact that the matter is not being rushed just for the sake of a reopening.”
