Neoen big battery ahead of schedule

¶ NEOEN is ahead of schedule as it builds towards the stage two completion of its Collie grid-scale battery.
A spokesperson told the Bulletin site works are progressing well and the bulk of equipment has been delivered to site, with the final components expected this month.
“The construction workforce has been steadily reducing, but notable resources remain on site to progress with precommissioning activities, getting stage two ready for energisation, and building the operations and maintenance facilities before undertaking final clean-up,” the spokesperson said.
“Our target is to achieve energisation this month and start operating stage two before October 1.”
Stage two of the battery comprises an additional 341 megawatts of storage capacity.
Stage one of the project, comprising 219 megawatts, began feeding into the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) during peak power usage hours last October.
The battery is designed to cater for WA’s growing use of rooftop solar and the retirement of coal-fired power plants, supporting electricity reliability amid the transition to renewable energy sources.
According to Neoen, altogether the battery will have the ability to charge and discharge 20 percent of the average demand in the SWIS.
