RESIDENTS holding tip passes will not be charged for the disposal of mattresses at the waste transfer station under the Shire of Collie’s proposed 2023-24 budget fees and charges.
The measure was included in the schedule of fees and charges adopted at this month’s shire meeting.
One tip pass punch per mattress will apply. Those who do not hold a tip pass will be charged $60 per item.
Previously, there was a $10 fee to dispose of a mattress, but this fell considerably short of the cost to the council of $58 to then deal with a mattress.
Those dumping rubbish in the bush often blame the cost of mattress disposal at the waste transfer station for their actions.
Provided they hold a tip pass, they will not be able to use that excuse in the future.
Collie Tidy Towns chairperson Nola Green said the majority of residents find dumping rubbish in the bush offensive and realise the harm it can do to the environment.
“With disposal of a mattress free to those with a tip pass, it is to be hoped dumping of rubbish in the bush stops, and people take their waste to the transfer station,” Mrs Green said.
