A SERIES of dog attacks on pets and livestock in North Collie last week has left two households devastated.
In one attack, 59 sheep and a pet emu were killed, and in another 19 sheep were killed.
Collie Shire has seized two dogs as a result of the attacks.
Shire president Sarah Stanley said the shire is “continuing to carry out the necessary investigations in relation to recent very serious attacks”.
Estelle Howells said her husband, Len, had discovered one of the dogs on their property early Thursday morning.
“My husband went down to feed the chooks at about 7 o’clock, he saw the dog, and it just took off, jumped the boundary fence and was gone,” Mrs Howells said.
“He had actually noticed that there were a couple of sheep lying down, and then of course saw the carnage that was left behind.”
Of the Howells’ 21 pet sheep, only two lambs survived.
Mrs Howells said one of the lambs had been bitten twice.
“We just hope that it pulls through, but you can imagine it’s totally traumatised,” she said.
The sheep had been a favourite of their great grandchildren, Mrs Howells added
“They would feed them and go into the paddock with them,” she said. “They’re just absolutely devastated as well.”
Mrs Howells said it was the first time they had experienced any issues with dogs attacking their sheep.
However, she said another neighbour had had a lot of ducks killed a few weeks ago.
“We had a couple of fox attacks many years ago, but nothing with dogs,” she said.
