Money for Miners: Government commits $1 mil. for major upgrades

¶ THE State Government has pledged $1 million for major upgrades to the Collie Mineworkers’ Institute if reelected.
The funding will pave the way for works including enhanced disability access and toilets at the 71-year-old building of which the Mining and Energy Union WA is the custodian.
District secretary Greg Busson told the Bulletin last November the institute was at a stage “where it’s had too many bandaids on it for too long”.
Mr Busson yesterday described the funding as a “good start”.
“It’s been a passion of mine and the union and a lot of people in the Collie community about seeing the old girl returned to her former glory,” he said.
“There’s some urgent stuff that needs attention and that’s our priority at this stage. Once we get through that we can then reassess where we’re at.”
Upon announcing the commitment, Regional Development Minister Don Punch acknowledged the building is in “dire need of upgrades”.
“The Collie Mineworkers’ Institute is a magnificent building that supports so many important events in the local community,” Mr Punch said.
Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said the funding will go towards securing the building’s future.
“The community absolutely loves the Collie Mineworkers’ Institute, and this investment will ensure it remains a focal point for community events for many years to come,” Mrs Hanns said.
