ST BRIGID’S School students put their problem-solving skills to the test on Saturday and passed with flying colours.
A team of four year-five boys and four year-six girls travelled to Bunbury to compete in the Creative Edge Problem Solving Challenge South West regional final, winning the competition’s primary age category.
Principal Rob La Roche said the students had addressed a humanities and social sciences challenge, with the competition comprising a six-week challenge and an impromptu challenge on the day.
The six-week challenge involved students addressing both historical and current-day events and issues.
“The students worked completely independently of any teachers,” Mr La Roche said.
“They had to create a solution, and come up with a 10-minute dramatic play that incorporated their solution, creating props and writing scripts.
“The last component of the challenge was, what’s a superpower that would help people deal with change, and their solution was ‘commonsense.’”
The impromptu challenge involved being given an object and asked to describe its meaning, with the students demonstrating quick thinking to create a story about a rare poisonous sea urchin turned gold by coral bleaching.
