¶ THE finishing touches are being put on a historic mining personnel carrier ahead of its installation in Phoenix Park.
Collie Shire Council gave the go ahead for the installation, which will be carried out by the Collie Retired Miners’ Association, at its December meeting.
The carrier was previously located at Coalfields Museum and Historical Research Centre, and the association was approached to see if they were interested in undertaking its restoration.
Association member Alan Bowers took on the job.
Mr Bowers told the Bulletin he has a personal connection with the carrier, having ridden on them during his 39 years working in the underground and open-cut mines.
The carriers were used to transport miners to working areas.
“I’ve put a new rail in due to rust, among other things,” Mr Bowers said.
“It’s been here for over a month now, and I’ve spent a few hours on it.
“We’re hoping to have it in the park next month.”
